Iran urges US to accept proposal to reopen Strait of Hormuz
USO•Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remains on the table, and the strait could reopen within six days if Washington accepts Tehran's conditions.
1. Proposal remains on table
Araqchi said Iran's proposal to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days remains on the table. Tehran presented it in mid-September after an interim ceasefire collapsed, and has received a US response that it is reviewing.
2. Conditions and timeline
Iran's conditions include lifting the US blockade on its ports and sanctions on its oil exports, as well as ending hostilities on all regional fronts. Araqchi said the strait could reopen within six days if Washington accepts the conditions, with talks resuming the following day.
3. Nuclear issue divides sides
Washington has insisted on addressing Iran's nuclear programme from the outset. US Vice President JD Vance said earlier this month Iran must make a “meaningful” reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity; Tehran says negotiations should initially focus on reopening the strait and restoring security there. Before the war, the waterway carried about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.
