Iranian negotiators met Qatari mediators in Doha as regional diplomats sought to avert renewed fighting after the US midterm elections. Qatar proposed a seven-day trust-building plan, which Tehran has not found satisfactory, while Iran’s supreme leader ordered the armed forces to prepare an immediate response to any attack.
Iranian negotiators met Qatari mediators in Doha on Saturday after more than 12 hours of talks between Iranian and Qatari envoys in Tehran on Friday, a source briefed on the negotiations said. The discussions were coordinated through regular contacts with Washington, the source said.
Qatar proposed a seven-day plan under which the United States and Iran would take daily steps to build trust before broader peace talks. A senior Iranian official said Tehran did not find the proposal satisfactory. Iran has put forward its own seven-day plan, calling for Washington to lift a blockade of Iranian ports, unfreeze assets and approve an Iranian-backed route through the Strait of Hormuz. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei ordered the armed forces to prepare an immediate response to any attack, and the military said it was improving its readiness.
