1. Tankers reported hit
Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy said two oil tankers caught fire after hitting naval mines while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state media reported. State media said both tankers were carrying about 2 million barrels of crude oil, and that the second vessel was immobilised.
2. Shipping tensions rise
Iranian state media said the vessels switched off their positioning and radar systems and attempted to use a route not authorised by Iran. Attacks around the waterway have surged over the past two weeks, as Iran said it was stepping up strikes in response to a U.S. blockade of its ports and tougher sanctions imposed last month.
