IRDM•Iridium has finalized its purchase of Aireon LLC, integrating the world’s only space-based ADS-B air traffic surveillance system into its global satellite communications and PNT network. The deal creates a unified aviation platform delivering real-time surveillance, connectivity and operational data, positioning Iridium to capture expanding aviation safety and intelligence markets.
Iridium has completed its acquisition of Aireon LLC, the operator of the world’s only space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system for global air traffic monitoring. The transaction closed July 6, 2026, making Aireon a wholly owned subsidiary focused on aviation surveillance services.
The acquisition merges Aireon’s space-based ADS-B network with Iridium’s global satellite communications constellation and resilient positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) infrastructure. This integration establishes a comprehensive platform offering real-time surveillance, trusted connectivity and actionable operational intelligence to aviation stakeholders worldwide.
Leadership continuity is ensured as Don Thoma remains CEO of Aireon, reporting directly to Matt Desch, Iridium’s CEO. This governance structure aligns both companies’ strategic objectives and facilitates seamless operational integration.
As global airspace grows more complex and reliant on resilient infrastructure, Iridium’s expanded capabilities position it to capture a larger share of the aviation safety and intelligence market. The combined offerings offer cross-selling opportunities and potential revenue growth from airlines, air navigation service providers and defense customers.
