Japan's $15 billion Rapidus chip bet hinges on winning customers
SNPS•Japan's Rapidus is partnering with 17 chip design companies as it seeks customers for planned 2-nanometre chip production in the second half of the next fiscal year. The venture has $15 billion in state research and development support.
1. Seeking customers
Rapidus said it would partner with 17 companies, including Synopsys and Infosys, to help customers design chips and seek manufacturing contracts. Its Hokkaido plant is scheduled to begin producing 2-nanometre chips in the second half of the next fiscal year.
2. Competition and caution
Rapidus faces established 2-nanometre manufacturers TSMC, Samsung Electronics and Intel. Some potential customers remain cautious about switching from TSMC, while one analyst said the partnership announcement represented incremental progress but was not yet evidence of commercial traction.
3. Funding and hurdles
Japan's industry ministry approved an additional $4 billion in assistance in April, bringing total research and development support to $15 billion. Rapidus says preparations for mass production are on schedule, but analysts say stable yields and commercially viable production remain difficult challenges. The company has targeted an initial public offering around the financial year ending March 2032.
