Jury Imposes $3M Liability on YouTube as Brin Joins White House AI Council
A Los Angeles jury ordered YouTube to pay $3 million for addictive platform design that allegedly caused a user’s anxiety and self-harm. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been tapped for a new White House tech council advising on AI’s impact on jobs and growth.
1. Landmark YouTube Liability Verdict
On March 25 a Los Angeles jury ruled that YouTube’s design features caused a user’s social media addiction, ordering $3 million in damages. The lawsuit, filed in 2023 by a woman known as K.G.M. and her mother, charged that YouTube exploited addictive algorithms and failed to warn of mental health risks, successfully bypassing Section 230 defenses by focusing on platform design.
2. Sergey Brin Joins White House Tech Council
Google co-founder Sergey Brin was appointed to a presidential council alongside leaders from Meta, Nvidia and AMD to advise on artificial intelligence policy. Co-chaired by David Sacks and Michael Kratsios, the group will tackle AI’s effects on jobs, productivity and long-term economic growth and could expand to 24 members over time.
