Kimberly-Clark Routes Patent Filings Through U.S. Due to India Delays
KMB•Kimberly-Clark’s global digital operations head said the company routes all patent filings through the U.S. due to five- to six-month examination delays in India—twice the U.S. timeframe. Indian global capability centres generated $98.4 billion last fiscal year, while patent applications rose 11.3% to over 90,000.
1. AI Adoption in Indian Hubs
Global companies, including Kimberly-Clark, are leveraging AI tools at Indian digital centres to automate routine tasks and focus on product innovation. AI-driven coding and analysis have contributed to a measurable increase in intellectual property generation, matching a broader 11.3% rise in patent filings nationwide and supporting rapid development of proprietary trade secrets.
2. Patent Filing Delays in India
Deena Dayalan, global head of digital operations at Kimberly-Clark, highlighted that Indian patent examinations take five to six months, roughly double U.S. timelines. Complex legal procedures, manpower shortages at the Indian Patent Office and high costs compel the company to process all filings through the U.S. system to ensure faster grant and protection.
3. Innovation and Cost Implications
Routing patents through U.S. offices may raise administrative and legal expenses for Kimberly-Clark but secures quicker rights to new technologies. With Indian global capability centres generating $98.4 billion in revenue last fiscal year, executives are weighing investments in local IP infrastructure to balance cost mitigation with the benefits of India’s growing innovation ecosystem.
