Kyivstar Debuts Nationwide Starlink Mobile Light Data for 4G LTE Smartphones
KYIV•Kyivstar launched a nationwide Starlink Mobile light data service letting 4G LTE smartphone users access Viber, WhatsApp and Google Maps via satellite when terrestrial coverage fails. Covering all non-occupied regions except border or active combat zones, it follows SMS rollout to boost resilience for messaging, voice and navigation during outages.
1. Service Launch and Capabilities
Kyivstar introduced its Starlink Mobile light data service on June 16, enabling 4G LTE smartphone users nationwide to use Viber, WhatsApp and Google Maps via Starlink satellites when terrestrial networks are unavailable. This marks the first nationwide deployment of satellite-based light data in Ukraine and follows the operator's earlier satellite SMS service.
2. Coverage Area and Device Support
The service covers all non-occupied regions of Ukraine, excluding border zones, active combat areas and temporarily occupied territories. Initially available on Android 4G LTE devices in outdoor locations lacking mobile coverage, compatibility will expand as additional handsets and technical adaptations are introduced.
3. Strategic Impact and Future Expansion
By leveraging satellite connectivity, Kyivstar aims to enhance network resilience during power outages, infrastructure damage and disruptions, offering messaging, voice and real-time navigation. Additional applications are slated for integration as they meet technical requirements, positioning Kyivstar at the forefront of communications innovation in challenging conditions.
