Lightbridge Joins DOE’s 5 GW UPRISE Initiative for Major Nuclear Power Uprates
LTBR•Lightbridge participated in the White House launch of DOE’s UPRISE initiative targeting 5 GW of nuclear capacity additions through power uprates at existing reactors. The company's Lightbridge Fuel, designed to deliver among the largest uprates for pressurized water reactors, is advancing through testing and qualification toward commercial deployment.
1. White House Launch of UPRISE Initiative
The U.S. Department of Energy launched the Utility Power Reactor Incremental Scaling Effort (UPRISE) at the White House, aiming to add approximately 5 GW of nuclear capacity by enabling uprates at operating reactors. The initiative assembles nuclear utilities, energy off-takers and other stakeholders to maximize output from the existing pressurized water reactor fleet.
2. Lightbridge Fuel Uprate Technology
Lightbridge participated in the event and highlighted its Lightbridge Fuel technology, which is being designed to deliver among the largest power uprates available for pressurized water reactors. The company is advancing testing and qualification of this next-generation fuel toward its first commercial deployments.
3. Strategic and Commercial Outlook
Participation in UPRISE positions Lightbridge for potential framework agreements and strategic partnerships, accelerating its path to commercialization and supporting the President’s directive on nuclear capacity expansion. Successful qualification could enhance investor confidence and open new revenue streams as utilities seek cost-effective uprate solutions.
