SPY•Oil surge weighs on stocks
The main U.S. stock indexes are lower early Wednesday as a surge in oil prices fuels concerns about deepening tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude futures climbed above $100 per barrel for the first time since July.
Nearly all S&P 500 sectors are now in negative territory, with consumer discretionary .SPLRCD and industrials .SPLRCI, both down 1%, leading the declines. Energy .SPNY, up 1%, is the only sector in the green. The energy sector is on pace for a record closing high.
Beneath the surface, gold and silver miners .XAU are among the market's better performers.
Investors are also keeping an eye on Apple AAPL.O, which is set to hold a launch event expected to feature the latest versions of its flagship products. The event marks the company's first major product unveiling since John Ternus succeeded Tim Cook as CEO. Apple shares are modestly lower on the day.
