Despite achieving record gross margins of 27.2% in the most recent quarter—up 15 percentage points year-over-year—Lumentum’s free cash flow remains close to breakeven, prompting questions around the sustainability of its cash generation profile. The company ended the quarter with approximately $2.0 billion of net debt on its balance sheet, reflecting significant capital expenditures on new laser and optics production lines. Additionally, management warned of customer concentration risk, with two major accounts representing roughly 40% of revenues, and indicated that any disruption in those relationships could materially affect profitability and cash flow.

At Photonics West 2026, Lumentum unveiled its PicoBlade Core ultrafast laser series—delivering up to 150 watts of average power with sub-12 picosecond pulses across NIR, green and UV wavelengths—and the NQ-Series nanosecond UV platform with 500 microjoules per pulse at 60 kHz repetition rates. These introductions, along with expanded VCSEL production for 3D sensing, are expected to open new addressable markets in precision micromachining, consumer electronics, and automotive lidar. Management forecasts that combined sales from these next-generation platforms could account for 25% of total revenue by fiscal 2028, underpinning a multi-year growth runway despite near-term free cash flow headwinds.
