Magdalena Biosciences’ Coca Extract Halts High-Fat Diet Weight Gain in 20-Day Study
JAGX•Jaguar Health’s joint-venture Magdalena Biosciences reported its coca leaf extract prevented weight gain in mice on a high-fat diet over 20 days without reducing food intake or boosting activity, positioning a post-GLP-1 weight maintenance therapy. The study used ENACO-certified Peruvian coca under FDA Botanical Guidance.
1. Preclinical Study Results
Magdalena Biosciences conducted a 20-day preclinical trial at the University of Calgary Borgland Lab showing its novel coca leaf extract prevented weight gain in mice on a high-fat diet without affecting food intake or physical activity.
2. Joint Venture Collaboration
The study leveraged ENACO-certified Peruvian coca under an IRCC compliant with the Nagoya Protocol, reflecting the partnership between Jaguar Health and Filament Health within the Magdalena Biosciences joint venture, funded initially by $1 million from One Small Planet.
3. Regulatory and Development Pathway
Magdalena intends to advance the extract as a prescription weight maintenance therapy for post-GLP-1 treatment under FDA Botanical Guidance, with preclinical success supporting plans for IND-enabling studies and long-term clinical evaluation.
