MPCMPC

Marathon Petroleum reported Q4 net income of $1.5 billion ($5.12/share) and adjusted EPS of $4.07, versus $1.15 and $0.77 last year, on $3.5 billion adjusted EBITDA (up from $2.1 billion). Strong cash flow generated $8.3 billion in operations and funded $4.5 billion of 2025 capital returns.

1. Strong Q4 Refining Performance

Marathon Petroleum reported a near fourfold increase in fourth-quarter refining EBITDA to $2.0 billion, up from $559 million a year earlier. This surge was driven by elevated crack spreads and a market capture rate of 114%, while crude capacity utilization rose to 95%, resulting in throughput of 3.0 million barrels per day. Refining & Marketing segment margin expanded to $18.65 per barrel, compared with $12.93 per barrel in the prior-year quarter, although operating costs increased to $5.70 per barrel from $5.26 due to higher turnaround activity and energy expenses.

2. Robust Capital Returns and Liquidity

Cash from operations reached $8.3 billion for the year, enabling peer-leading shareholder returns of $4.5 billion in 2025 and an 11.7% capital return yield. In the fourth quarter alone, the company repurchased $1.3 billion of stock and ended the period with $4.4 billion of repurchase authorization remaining. Liquidity remains strong, with $3.7 billion in cash and equivalents and no outstanding borrowings on its $5 billion revolving credit facility, while MPLX distributions are expected to fully fund the 2026 dividend and standalone capital program.

3. Earnings Beat and Valuation Upside

Adjusted net income for the quarter was $1.2 billion, or $4.07 per diluted share, topping the estimate of $2.73 per share and dwarfing the prior year’s $0.77 per share. Adjusted EBITDA climbed to $3.5 billion from $2.1 billion. Equity analysts have assigned a 'strong buy' rating, citing undervalued refining assets and an estimated 20% upside potential based on projected free cash flow generation and continued aggressive capital return policies.
