Mercury Insurance Data Reveals 61,000 Crashes at 3pm, More Severe Injuries at 4pm
Mercury Insurance’s five-year analysis shows weekday crash volume peaks at 3:00–3:10 pm while injury severity peaks at 4:00–4:10 pm, involving over 61,000 people. Weekend crash peaks shift to 12:00–12:10 pm with about 19,000 people involved and a nine percent injury rate.
1. Claims Data Identifies Peak Crash Times
Mercury Insurance analyzed five years of proprietary claims and found weekday crash volume concentrates between 3:00 and 3:10 pm, with over 61,000 incidents in that 10-minute window. Injury severity then peaks between 4:00 and 4:10 pm as traffic speeds rise and collisions become more severe.
2. Weekend Shifts and Pedestrian Risk
On weekends, both crash volume and injury rates shift earlier, peaking around 12:00–12:10 pm with roughly 19,000 people involved and a nine percent injury rate. Pedestrian incidents during these windows carry injury rates exceeding 60 percent, reflecting higher vulnerability.
3. Safety Insights and Risk Management
Mercury Insurance advises drivers to reduce distractions, maintain safe following distances and adjust driving behavior as traffic patterns evolve. The findings may inform the insurer’s underwriting models and pricing strategies by highlighting time-of-day risk variations.
