Meta Locks in 6.6GW of Nuclear Power Through 20-Year Deals with Vistra, Oklo and TerraPower

Meta Platforms signed 20-year PPAs to purchase 2.1GW of zero-carbon nuclear energy from Vistra’s Perry, Davis-Besse and Beaver Valley plants and will fund 1.2GW Oklo and 690MW TerraPower small modular reactor projects slated online by 2030-32. These agreements secure up to 6.6GW of long-term power, de-risking data center energy costs.

1. Meta Secures 20-Year Nuclear Power Purchase Agreement with Vistra

Meta Platforms has signed a landmark 20-year power purchase agreement with Vistra Energy to procure more than 2,600 megawatts of zero-carbon nuclear energy. Under the deal, 2,176 MW will come from the Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio, which are already operational, and an additional 433 MW will be generated through equipment upgrades at those sites and at Vistra’s Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania. Power deliveries are set to begin in late 2026, with full capacity coming online by 2034. This long-term commitment not only guarantees clean baseload power for Meta’s expanding AI data centers but also provides the financing needed to extend the operating licenses of all three reactors for up to two additional decades—facilities that were previously slated for retirement before Vistra’s acquisition in 2023.

2. Driving Meta’s AI Growth with Reliable, Carbon-Free Energy

As Meta scales its artificial-intelligence infrastructure, uninterrupted, low-carbon electricity has become critical. The new Vistra agreement is expected to supply roughly 30% of the projected power needs for Meta’s forthcoming AI clusters in the U.S. Midwest. By securing a stable energy tariff structure over two decades, Meta can better forecast operating costs for its Llama AI models and other compute-intensive workloads. The zero-carbon nature of nuclear generation also helps Meta meet its corporate sustainability targets, as the social media giant has pledged to reach net-zero emissions across its operations by 2030.

3. Expanding Nuclear Partnerships with SMR Developers

Beyond legacy reactors, Meta is partnering with next-generation nuclear firms Oklo and TerraPower to diversify its power mix. Meta will prepay for energy from Oklo’s planned 1.2-GW project in Ohio, accelerating site studies and fuel procurement with an expected online date by 2030. Simultaneously, Meta has secured development rights for up to eight small modular reactors from TerraPower—two reactors totaling 690 MW by 2032, with options for six more units delivering up to 2.8 GW plus 1.2 GW of thermal energy storage. These agreements underscore Meta’s strategy of blending proven nuclear capacity with innovative SMR technology to ensure scalable, dispatchable power for its data centers over the next decade.
