Meta, TikTok and X lose legal challenge against UK watchdog over online safety data demands
META•Meta, TikTok and X lost a High Court challenge against Ofcom’s requests for online safety data. The regulator can seek detailed content moderation metrics under a regime that allows fines of up to 10% of global turnover for the most serious breaches.
1. Challenge rejected
Meta, TikTok and X lost their legal challenge against British regulator Ofcom over the amount of information it is demanding under the UK’s Online Safety Act. The companies argued that the requests created unprecedented regulatory burdens.
2. Data requests
Ofcom issued information notices in February requesting detailed content moderation metrics, including how many posts were removed or had their visibility restricted and how many users were exposed to harmful content. The 2023 law sets standards for platforms including TikTok, X, Facebook and Instagram, with fines of up to 10% of global turnover for the most serious breaches.
