Meta’s Threads Tops 141.5M Daily Mobile Users, Beats X’s 125M

METAMETA

Threads achieved 141.5 million daily mobile active users as of January 7, surpassing X’s 125 million, according to Similarweb data. While Threads lags on web with minimal traffic, Meta’s mobile-first growth underscores its competitive edge in social media engagement.

1. Threads Mobile Usage Surpasses X

Data from Similarweb as of January 7 shows that Meta’s text-based app Threads reached 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android, overtaking Elon Musk’s X platform, which recorded 125 million daily mobile users. While X continues to lead on web traffic with roughly 150 million daily visits, Threads has exhibited steady month-over-month gains since its launch in mid-2023, highlighting Meta’s ability to leverage its existing user base across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to drive adoption of its Twitter rival on mobile devices.

2. Meta Compute Initiative Aims for Gigawatt-Scale AI Infrastructure

At its recent AI summit, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Meta Compute, a centralized organization co-led by Santosh Janardhan and Daniel Gross and guided by president Dina Powell McCormick, charged with designing data centers and managing supply-chain partnerships. The initiative targets the deployment of tens of gigawatts of compute capacity by 2030, with ambitions to scale to hundreds of gigawatts over time—energy levels on par with small nations. This build-out responds to lukewarm reception of last year’s Llama 4 model and positions Meta to compete more effectively with Google, Microsoft and OpenAI by controlling both hardware and energy procurement.

3. Heavy AI-Driven Capital Expenditures Underpin Growth Strategy

Meta invested approximately $39 billion in capital expenditures during 2024, a figure projected to rise to around $71 billion for the full year of 2025, according to CFO Susan Li. Management expects capex growth to accelerate further in 2026, reflecting the company’s commitment to expand its AI compute infrastructure. These outlays coincide with record profitability—Meta generated roughly $37.7 billion in net income on $141.1 billion in revenue through the first nine months of 2025—and support AI-powered features that have driven engagement gains across its family of apps and enhanced advertising tools that delivered $50 billion in third-quarter ad revenue.
