Mexico enacts reform barring dual citizens from presidency
EWW•Mexico enacted a reform barring people with dual nationality from running for president, state governor or Mexico City mayor starting in 2028. The measure requires candidates to renounce non-Mexican ties before running.
1. Rules start in 2028
The reform, proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum and approved by lawmakers and senators from the ruling Morena party and its allies, will apply from 2028. Sheinbaum said no president or governor may hold dual citizenship.
2. Opposition criticizes measure
Opponents say the reform violates the rights of Mexicans who acquired another citizenship and note that the Constitution already sets nationality requirements for top positions. The opposition PAN party said it conflicts with rules allowing members of Congress to hold other nationalities. Next year's midterm elections, including some state governor races, will proceed without changes.
