Mexico to require digital platforms to protect minors from violent, sexual content
XLK•Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she will sign a decree requiring digital platforms to shield minors from violent, sexual and other harmful content. Platforms will have one month to comply, and the government may back legislation imposing penalties for noncompliance.
1. Decree sets compliance deadline
Sheinbaum said she will sign the decree on Wednesday. Government adviser Luisa Maria Alcalde said platforms will have one month to comply.
2. Penalties could follow
Sheinbaum said the government would back a bill to impose punishments if firms do not follow the decree. Officials said they had met with Meta, Microsoft, Apple, TikTok, Google, X and Huawei to discuss the matter.
3. Broader online protections
The move follows efforts in Europe, Australia and Brazil to strengthen protections for minors online. Such measures have raised questions about protecting minors while safeguarding privacy and freedom of expression.
