Mexico's Baja braces as Hurricane Polo nears landfall
GM•Hurricane Polo approached Baja California Sur as a Category 3 storm, with the National Hurricane Center forecasting a second landfall in southern Sonora early Tuesday. General Motors suspended production at its Ramos Arizpe plant on Monday and expected normal operations to resume Tuesday.
1. Polo nears landfall
Polo threatened Baja California Sur with destructive winds, flash floods and storm surge on Monday evening. The National Hurricane Center forecast an initial landfall in a less populated area than the Los Cabos resort corridor, followed by a crossing of the Gulf of California and a second landfall in southern Sonora early Tuesday, still at hurricane strength.
2. Disruptions and Rachel
Authorities closed beaches, suspended maritime activity in high-risk areas and opened temporary shelters. General Motors said it suspended production at its Ramos Arizpe assembly plant in Coahuila because of disruption linked to Polo and expected normal operations to resume Tuesday. Tropical Storm Rachel, meanwhile, had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was forecast to strengthen into a hurricane by midweek.
