Michigan Republican Mike Rogers calls for end to Canada tariff fight, breaking with Trump again
SPY•Mike Rogers called for an immediate end to the U.S.-Canada tariff dispute, saying it would ease costs for businesses and consumers. The Michigan Senate candidate had praised Trump’s tariffs as “necessary” last month.
1. Rogers calls for tariff end
Rogers said in an ad posted on X that the trade fight with Canada should end immediately. He said the country was not Michigan’s enemy and that he would work with both parties to lower prices.
2. Race and tariff dispute
Rogers is running neck-and-neck with Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in public polling. The dispute began in July, when Trump announced tariffs on Canadian imports that took effect the following month; Canada responded with retaliatory measures. Michigan automakers rely on cross-border supply chains, and industry leaders have warned that a prolonged trade war could threaten jobs.
3. El-Sayed criticizes reversal
El-Sayed said Rogers had supported the tariff fight from the beginning and was changing his position because of his poll numbers. Rogers also called for an end to the war with Iran two weeks earlier, after previously supporting it.
