Micron union in Taiwan to launch strike as bonus dispute escalates
MU•A union representing Micron workers in Taoyuan, Taiwan, said it would launch a strike on Thursday to press for a concrete profit-sharing proposal. The action is planned to coincide with a mediation meeting involving Micron and a separate union representing workers in Taichung.
1. Strike planned in Taoyuan
The Taoyuan union said the strike would show solidarity with the Taichung union and increase pressure on Micron to put forward a concrete profit-sharing proposal. It did not specify how long the strike would last and said it would release details on Thursday.
2. Unions seek profit sharing
Micron employs about 15,000 people in Taiwan, where separate unions represent workers at its Taoyuan and Taichung operations. Mediation with the Taoyuan union ended without an agreement in September, while the Taichung union remains in negotiations and has not voted on whether to strike. Micron said it has invested more than T$1.6 trillion ($49 billion) on the island.
