Mike Flanagan reimagines 'Carrie' for new generation facing cyberbullying, active shooter drills
AMZN•'Carrie' returns this week in an eight-part adaptation by Mike Flanagan, updating Stephen King's 1974 novel with social media, cyberbullying and active shooter drills. The series begins streaming globally on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday.
1. A modern adaptation
The series follows socially isolated teenager Carrie White as she struggles to fit in at high school and navigates a complicated relationship with her overprotective mother. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie, and Samantha Sloyan plays her mother.
2. Themes of bullying
Flanagan said his perspective shifted as his son prepared to enter high school, and that he wanted to explore choices between cruelty and kindness. Cast members said the series examines online harassment, pressure on teenagers and personal responsibility.
