Missouri American Water Seeks $1.6B Rate Increase to Fund Infrastructure Upgrades
AWK•Missouri American Water filed a rate request with the Missouri Public Service Commission to support approximately $1.6 billion in water and wastewater investments from June 2025 through May 2028, serving over 1.7 million customers across 30 counties and replacing around 140 miles of aging pipeline. If approved, the average St. Louis County residential bill for 5,900 gallons per month would rise by about $23 and by $15 outside the county, while Kentucky American Water issued tips to reduce up to 30% evaporation loss, fix household leaks and mulch garden beds to help customers manage summer bills.
1. Missouri American Water Files $1.6 B Rate Request
On July 1, Missouri American Water submitted a rate filing to the Missouri Public Service Commission seeking new rates to underwrite approximately $1.6 billion in water and wastewater system investments from June 2025 through May 2028. The plan targets replacement of about 140 miles of aging pipelines, upgrades to storage tanks, pumping stations and treatment facilities to address PFAS and other contaminants, and improvements across St. Louis County, Jefferson City, St. Joseph and Joplin. If granted as proposed, the average residential water bill in St. Louis County using 5,900 gallons monthly would increase by roughly $23, with a $15 rise for 4,500 gallons outside the county; wastewater rates would see modest adjustments based on usage tiers.
2. Kentucky American Water Issues Summer Water Tips
Also on July 1, Kentucky American Water advised customers during an extended heat wave to adopt efficient watering practices—such as irrigating early morning or late evening to reduce up to 30% evaporation, collecting rainwater in barrels, checking sprinkler heads to avoid waste, using a broom instead of a hose for patios, mulching beds 2–3 inches deep and monitoring leaks that can waste 90+ gallons daily. Customers can track usage via the MyWater portal, which offers up to two years of data, budget billing options and information on assistance programs.
