Mitsubishi pre-purchased capacity on Starlab's commercial station and joined its board via Issei Shinohara to secure payload rights for drug discovery and semiconductor research. It also committed $600m for a 30% stake in Hudbay's fully-permitted Copper World project, funding $420m now and $180m within 18 months.

1. Mitsubishi Corporation Becomes Foundational Customer and Investor in Starlab

Mitsubishi Corporation has reserved and pre-purchased significant payload capacity on Starlab’s next-generation commercial space station, securing usage rights for designated payload volume and on-orbit laboratory facilities. The commitment includes an expanded equity investment and a seat on Starlab’s Board of Directors, represented by Issei Shinohara. Mitsubishi’s involvement is slated to accelerate space-based research in drug discovery, nano-medicine, advanced material development and next-generation semiconductor manufacturing for Japanese institutions. This transaction follows Starlab’s December completion of its critical design review and adds to the company’s progress of 27 development milestones and over $232 million in public funding.

2. Strategic $600 Million JV Investment Enhances Mitsubishi’s Copper Exposure

Mitsubishi Corporation has closed a $600 million strategic investment to acquire a 30% interest in Copper World LLC, the fully-permitted copper development project in Arizona. An initial cash contribution of $420 million has been made at closing, with a further $180 million to be funded within 18 months. Mitsubishi will also cover its pro-rata share of future capital calls for project construction. The deal reduces Hudbay’s capital requirement by approximately $400 million and boosts project internal rate of return to roughly 90% on pre-feasibility estimates. This partnership positions Mitsubishi among a select group of global trading houses with direct exposure to one of North America’s largest copper growth assets.
