Most Americans support switch to Medicare for all health insurance
XLV•Support for universal government-paid health insurance rose to 66% from 53% in 2020, while 52% backed a single-payer system that would eliminate private plans, up from 37%.
1. Support rises
Two-thirds of U.S. adults favor universal government-paid health insurance, often called “Medicare for all,” according to a KFF poll. Support was 84% among Democrats and 72% among independents, while 66% of Republicans opposed it.
2. Healthcare costs concern voters
When respondents were told a single-payer system would eliminate private insurance plans, support fell to 52%. Healthcare expenses were the leading economic concern: 60% said they were very or somewhat worried about affording health costs, compared with 59% for gasoline and 52% for groceries. The September survey included 1,328 U.S. adults, most of them registered voters.
