NANO Nuclear and GNS Reach Conceptual Milestone for HALEU Transport Package
NANO Nuclear Energy and GNS achieved a conceptual design milestone for a proprietary HALEU transport package capable of carrying multiple fuel types, including TRISO and molten salt fuels. The collaboration under an NRC Quality Assurance program advances compliance with 10 CFR Part 71 standards, supporting future certification and commercial deployment.
1. Collaboration Milestone
Under a September 2024 agreement, NANO Nuclear’s subsidiary Advanced Fuel Transportation teamed with GNS to develop an optimized High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium transport package, achieving a conceptual design milestone for its proprietary basket and overpack system.
2. Technical Design Achievements
Engineers completed conceptual designs for two HALEU payload baskets and a preliminary overpack design, ensuring compatibility with uranium oxide, TRISO, uranium-zirconium hydride, mononitride, and molten salt fuels while conducting initial regulatory analyses under NRC quality standards.
3. Regulatory Pathway
All design work was conducted under an NRC Quality Assurance program, with initial regulatory analyses indicating compliance potential with 10 CFR Part 71 requirements; NANO Nuclear plans further engineering validation and formal engagement with the NRC for certification.
4. Strategic Supply Chain Impact
The optimized transport solution addresses critical HALEU logistics challenges for next-generation microreactors and SMRs, positioning NANO Nuclear as a key contributor to the advanced nuclear fuel supply chain and supporting broader commercialization efforts.
