Navan Unveils Model Context Protocol to Enable AI Chat Queries on T&E Data
NAVN•Navan launched its Model Context Protocol (MCP) within its AI-powered travel and expense platform, enabling admins to access spend, booking and policy data via natural-language queries in AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude. The initial release is read-only, with upcoming write-capabilities for approving expenses, updating policies and booking integrations.
1. Model Context Protocol Launch
Navan has introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP) within its platform, connecting corporate travel and expense data to external AI systems through secure APIs. This protocol leverages over a decade of Navan’s T&E data to deliver context-aware insights and form the foundation for deeper AI-driven workflows.
2. AI Tool Integration and Querying
Once enabled via the Navan configuration portal, finance and travel administrators can use simple natural-language prompts inside AI interfaces such as ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor to retrieve aggregate spend metrics, booking statuses and policy compliance details. MCP serves as a universal adapter that transforms complex backend structures into conversational queries and simplifies data analysis.
3. Upcoming Write-Access Capabilities
While the initial MCP deployment is read-only, upcoming updates will introduce write-access features, including out-of-pocket expense approvals, policy updates and direct travel bookings within AI workflows. These enhancements align with Navan’s broader distribution strategy and aim to embed T&E management deeper into everyday enterprise tools.
