Nearly 12,000 California residents bought EVs using state rebate program
XLY•Nearly 12,000 California residents bought electric vehicles using rebates from a $270 million program funded by the state and automakers. EVs accounted for 18% of California sales through September 30, down from 23% last year and 25% in 2024.
1. Rebate program draws buyers
California said nearly 12,000 residents bought electric vehicles using rebates under a $270 million program funded equally by the state and participating automakers. The program offers $3,500 for a new EV priced up to $50,000 and $1,750 for a used EV costing no more than $25,000, for residents buying their first EV.
2. State sales share falls
EVs accounted for 18% of California vehicle sales through September 30, compared with 23% last year and 25% in 2024. The article says overall EV sales have fallen in California and nationwide as the federal government removed incentives; Tesla vehicles account for more than half of EVs sold in California. No program funds remain for Tesla models.
3. Federal incentives end
The federal $7,500 EV tax credit and $4,000 used EV credit were eliminated by legislation signed by President Donald Trump in 2025. California's previous rebate program ended in 2023 after spending $1.49 billion to subsidize 586,000 EV purchases over a decade.
