NFLX•Netflix will acquire Ben Affleck’s AI startup InterPositive for up to $600 million, with patent tools projecting 10–20% below-the-line cost savings and 70% cuts for background actors. Its ad tier targets $3 billion revenue by 2026—6% of total sales—boosting ARPU and member engagement.
1. Acquisition of AI Startup
Netflix announced on March 5 that it will purchase InterPositive, a three-year-old AI startup founded by Ben Affleck, for up to $600 million including cash and performance earnouts. The 16-person team will join Netflix and Affleck will serve as senior adviser.
2. Patent-Driven Cost Reductions
InterPositive’s patent, filed in November 2024, outlines AI tools trained on daily raw footage to automate tasks like wire removal, shot reframing and relighting. Projections estimate 10–20% below-the-line savings overall, with specific cuts of 50% for visual effects, 70% for background actors and 40% for set dressing.
3. Ad Business Growth
Netflix’s ad-supported tier aims to generate $3 billion in revenue by 2026, accounting for about 6% of total sales. This push is expected to boost ARPU and member engagement while leveraging high lifetime-value to customer-acquisition-cost dynamics.
4. Strategic Implications
By combining AI-driven production efficiencies and ad revenue expansion, Netflix could enhance margins, diversify its business model and support long-term valuation growth.
