NTGR•Netgear’s 2026 IoT Security Landscape Report found TVs account for 22.7% of smart home security vulnerabilities, while TVs, smart plugs and storage drives together made up two-thirds of known device vulnerabilities. Bitdefender recorded 4.85 billion automated intrusion attempts over nine months.
1. Device security findings
Netgear’s report said TVs, smart plugs and storage drives accounted for two-thirds of known device vulnerabilities. It also cited 4.85 billion automated intrusion attempts recorded by Bitdefender over nine months, including 466.6 million password-guessing attempts.
2. Update gap
The report said households keep smart devices for five to 10 years, while manufacturers typically provide security updates for two to four years. It warned that shared components could expose multiple brands to a single flaw and said manufacturers’ security-update records are a purchasing consideration.
