New York AG Seeks Cleanup Costs and Fines from Chemours in PFAS Lawsuit
CC•New York AG Letitia James sued Chemours, 3M, DuPont, Corteva and EIDP, alleging they concealed internal PFAS research from the 1970s and sold the “forever chemicals” in cookware and stain-resistant fabrics. 1. Lawsuit Filed by New York AG
On July 9, 2026, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit naming Chemours among five chemical manufacturers including 3M, DuPont, Corteva and EIDP, alleging they knowingly produced and marketed PFAS for decades while hiding health risks.
2. Alleged Concealment of PFAS Research
The lawsuit alleges that internal company research from the 1970s documented PFAS toxicity and environmental persistence, yet the companies continued selling PFAS-based products without disclosing the findings to regulators or consumers.
3. Claims Against Chemours’ Products
Chemours is accused of supplying PFAS compounds in consumer items such as non-stick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics, as well as replacing phased-out chemicals with similar “forever chemicals” in food packaging and cosmetics.
4. Potential Financial and Operational Impact
The AG seeks a court order requiring Chemours to fund statewide soil and water cleanup efforts, issue consumer warnings, halt misleading advertising and pay damages, restitution and disgorgement, intensifying financial and operational risks as PFAS litigation escalates.
