New York and New Jersey declare states of emergency as nor’easter threatens flooding and outages
JBLU•Governors in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency in counties expected to see the worst of a nor’easter forecast to bring flooding, strong winds and heavy rain to the East Coast. Airlines waived change fees for eligible Northeast flights, while concerts and sporting events were canceled or rescheduled.
1. States of emergency declared
A nor’easter is expected to bring flooding, powerful wind gusts, heavy rain and rip currents to areas from Maine to Washington, D.C., over the weekend. New York and New Jersey governors declared states of emergency in counties expected to be hit hardest, including New York City. New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged people to take the storm seriously.
2. Travel and events disrupted
The Federal Aviation Administration said strong winds could disrupt flights at all three major New York City-area airports. American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines waived change fees for eligible flights and encouraged customers to postpone Northeast travel from Friday through Sunday. Amtrak warned of possible service disruptions, and New York City officials warned of potential basement flooding, power outages and travel problems.
3. Concerts and games changed
The Global Citizen Festival in Manhattan’s Central Park and Ed Sheeran concerts near Boston were canceled. Major League Baseball rescheduled Sunday’s Boston game between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox for Friday, creating a doubleheader, while the New York Yankees moved Saturday’s home game against the Baltimore Orioles to Friday afternoon.
