New York Times sues maker of Brave web browser over copyrights
NYT•A group of newspapers, including the New York Times and New York Daily News, sued Brave Software, alleging it scraped articles for AI training and helped users circumvent paywalls.
1. Copyright allegations
The newspapers filed lawsuits in Manhattan federal court alleging that Brave illegally sells their content to AI companies, including Anthropic, Perplexity and xAI, and infringes their copyrights by enabling users to access articles for free. The three AI companies are not defendants in the cases.
2. Brave and AI disputes
New York Times spokesperson Graham James said the company believes in the ethical and responsible use and development of AI, but alleged that Brave ignored repeated requests to stop its infringing conduct. The complaints are part of a wave of lawsuits by copyright owners over the use of their content for AI training; the outlets have separately sued OpenAI.
