Niagen Bioscience cites preclinical study showing NR restores placental NAD+ and improves pregnancy outcomes in aged mice
NAGE•Company note
Niagen Bioscience did not conduct, fund or design the study, and the NR used was not its Niagen ingredient.
Findings in aged pregnant mice
In aged pregnant mice, oral nicotinamide riboside or a CD38 inhibitor restored placental NAD+ and improved fetal growth outcomes.
Mechanistic data showed CD38 degrades NMN outside cells. Prior research cited NR as inhibiting CD38, supporting NR’s relative efficacy in high-CD38 tissue.
Preclinical study highlights CD38-driven NAD+ decline
Niagen Bioscience highlighted an independent Nature Communications preclinical study on CD38-driven, age-related NAD+ decline in placental tissue.
Human placental samples showed older mothers had lower NAD+, NADH and NADP+, while higher metabolite levels correlated with higher infant birth weight.
