Novo Nordisk Launches Weekly Basal Insulin Awiqli in India's High-Diabetes Market
NVO•Novo Nordisk has launched its weekly basal insulin injection Awiqli in India, targeting patients in one of the world’s highest diabetes prevalence markets. The therapy’s once-weekly dosing aims to boost adherence and expands Novo Nordisk’s insulin portfolio ahead of steep local demand growth.
1. Product Launch and Dosing
On July 9, Novo Nordisk began commercial distribution of Awiqli, its first once-weekly basal insulin injection, following regulatory clearance in India. The launch aims to offer insulin-dependent patients reduced injection frequency, potentially improving adherence over daily regimens.
2. Indian Diabetes Market Dynamics
India currently has over 100 million adults living with diabetes, representing one of the fastest-growing insulin markets globally. Rising urbanization, lifestyle changes and government health initiatives are driving demand for advanced insulin therapies.
3. Competitive and Financial Implications
Awiqli’s entry positions Novo Nordisk ahead of competitors like Sanofi and Lilly in the weekly insulin segment, where differentiation is key. Analysts expect the product to support mid-single-digit percentage growth in emerging-market insulin revenues over the next two years.
