NPCI Partners with NVIDIA to Build Payments-Native AI Model for UPI
National Payments Corporation of India will deploy NVIDIA Nemotron to build a payments-native AI foundation model tailored to India’s regulatory and data sovereignty requirements for UPI workflows. NPCI plans to incorporate Mixture of Experts architectures and multilingual datasets to support high-volume, low-latency payment processing and expand FiMI capabilities.
1. Collaboration Scope
NPCI has engaged NVIDIA to integrate its Nemotron open-model family into a sovereign AI framework for India’s digital payments ecosystem. This partnership aims to develop a foundational AI model specifically optimized for payment workflows, building on NPCI’s in-house FiMI language model.
2. Technical Architecture
The initiative will explore Mixture of Experts (MoE) architectures to meet high-volume, low-latency demands and will train on multilingual datasets to serve India’s diverse user base. The model’s design prioritizes data security and regulatory compliance aligned with India’s sovereignty mandates.
3. Ecosystem Integration
Beyond powering the existing UPI Help Assistant for grievance redressal, the foundational AI layer is intended for broader adoption by banks, fintechs, and other participants. NPCI envisions applications in trust frameworks, operational intelligence, and secure governance across payment workflows.
4. Implications for NVIDIA
Securing a national payments authority as a launch partner enhances NVIDIA’s presence in enterprise AI and financial services. Success in this large-scale deployment could drive further adoption of NVIDIA AI technologies across India’s banking and fintech sectors.
