The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission renewed and updated certification of Westinghouse’s AP1000 nuclear reactor design through 2066. The updated design incorporates lessons learned from construction and operation of Vogtle units 3 and 4.
The NRC said the updated certification is intended to reduce duplicative regulatory reviews and lower licensing costs. Future AP1000 projects will still require site-specific environmental, safety and security approvals; the action does not authorize the siting, construction or operation of any nuclear facility.
