Southern California Edison warns of potential wildfire-related power shutoffs
EIX•Southern California Edison is considering power shutoffs for up to 245,700 customers in parts of Southern California from Wednesday to Friday because strong winds and dry conditions could increase wildfire risk. No decision has been made.
1. Potential shutoffs
Southern California Edison said strong winds and dry conditions in parts of Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Kern and Tulare counties could increase wildfire risk between Wednesday and Friday. The utility is considering shutoffs for up to 245,700 customers, but said it will decide based on real-time weather and wildfire conditions.
2. Monitoring and restoration
The utility evaluates wind speeds, vegetation dryness and relative humidity, using about 2,000 weather stations, 200 wildfire cameras and ground patrols to monitor high-risk areas. If power is shut off, crews will inspect lines and equipment before restoring service, a process that typically takes up to eight hours but could take longer if damage is found or further inspections are needed.
