Nutrien to shut Trinidad Nitrogen operations amid gas supply constraints
NTR•Nutrien said it will indefinitely shut its Trinidad Nitrogen operations at Point Lisas, citing natural gas supply constraints and uncertainty in the country. The company said the move is expected to improve free cash flow and return on invested capital, and will not affect its 2026 nitrogen sales outlook.
1. Indefinite shutdown
Nutrien said it will indefinitely shut its Trinidad Nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas facility after reviewing strategic alternatives. The company cited ongoing natural gas supply constraints and uncertainty in the country.
2. Supply and output
Nutrien began a controlled shutdown of the facility on October 23, 2025, citing port access restrictions imposed by Trinidad and Tobago’s National Energy Corporation and a lack of reliable, economic natural gas supply. The company said those challenges had reduced the operations’ free cash flow contribution over an extended period. The facility produced about 85,000 metric tons of ammonia and 55,000 metric tons of urea per month.
3. Sales outlook unchanged
Nutrien said the shutdown is expected to improve free cash flow and return on invested capital. It said the move will not affect its 2026 nitrogen sales outlook, with its North American operations expected to meet customer demand.
