Shares of Nuwellis (NUWE.O) rose 173% to $5.16 in premarket trading.
The company said the medical journal Frontiers in Pediatrics has accepted a study suggesting epoprostenol can be a safe alternative blood thinner for critically ill children undergoing Aquadex therapy.
Epoprostenol is a drug that helps prevent blood clots and was used to keep Nuwellis' Aquadex treatment circuit working properly in these patients.
The study reviewed 46 children and found the approach kept the filtration system running without increasing bleeding risk or the need for additional blood-pressure support.
Researchers said epoprostenol may offer another option for pediatric patients who cannot use standard anticoagulants.
As of the last close, the stock was down 96.9% year to date.
