NYSE short interest rose 1.5 percent in mid-October
SPY•NYSE short interest increased 1.5% to about 23.724 billion shares as of Oct. 15, from 23.371 billion shares on Sept. 30.

Short interest on the New York Stock Exchange rose 1.5% in mid-October, reaching about 23.724 billion shares as of Oct. 15, compared with 23.371 billion shares on Sept. 30. Investors who sell short borrow shares and sell them, expecting to buy them back at a lower price.
