Oracle plans fuel-cell microgrid to reduce Project Jupiter emissions
ORCL•Oracle’s revised Project Jupiter plan replaces gas turbines and diesel backup generators with Bloom Energy fuel cells for a private microgrid with up to 2.45 gigawatts of installed capacity.
1. Revised power plan
Oracle’s Oct. 22 update replaces planned gas turbines and diesel backup generators with Bloom Energy fuel cells for its data center campus in Doña Ana County, New Mexico. The private microgrid is planned to provide up to 2.45 gigawatts of installed capacity. The revised design is expected to substantially reduce nitrogen oxide emissions versus previous plans while using negligible water.
2. Funding and requirements
Project-related power costs will be privately funded, requiring no utility customer funding for new generation, transmission or distribution infrastructure. New Mexico’s 2025 Advanced Grid Technology Act requires qualifying microgrids’ generated and sold energy to come from net-zero-carbon resources by 2045.
