Over $130B in AI Data Centers Blocked, Threatening ASML’s Tool Demand
ASML•U.S. communities have blocked or delayed over $130 billion of AI data center projects in the first quarter of 2026, including Google’s $1 billion Indianapolis proposal and Amazon’s $3.6 billion Tucson campus. These setbacks threaten demand for advanced lithography tools from ASML as hyperscale builders scramble for alternative sites.
1. Project Blockades and Delays
Communities across the U.S. have blocked or delayed over $130 billion of AI data center projects in the first three months of 2026. High-profile cancellations include Google’s $1 billion Indianapolis proposal and Amazon’s $3.6 billion Tucson campus, with similar hurdles reported in Virginia, Texas, Indiana and Georgia.
2. Implications for Equipment Suppliers
Construction slowdowns threaten equipment orders as hyperscalers postpone purchases of semiconductor manufacturing and advanced lithography systems. Suppliers of wafer fab and AI training accelerators, notably ASML, could see softened demand as builders seek greenfield sites with fewer regulatory barriers.
3. Bitzero’s Alternative Strategy
Finland and Norway-based Bitzero has leveraged early grid approvals and community support to advance more than 1 GW of clean-energy AI capacity. Its flagship Nordic sites, powered by 100% hydroelectric energy at 3–4 cents per kilowatt-hour, are progressing as U.S. projects stall.
