POSCO joins South Korea K-GX project to build HyREX-based low-carbon steel ecosystem
PKX•POSCO Holdings joined South Korea’s K-GX Steel GX project and plans a 300,000-ton-a-year HyREX pilot facility in Pohang by 2028. The company projected the southeast cluster could generate KRW 6 trillion in economic impact, create 14,000 jobs and cut annual carbon emissions by 560,000 tons.
1. Pilot and expansion plans
POSCO Holdings joined the government-backed Steel GX project, which centers on HyREX hydrogen-based steelmaking supported by clean power and clean hydrogen. The company plans to build a 300,000-ton-a-year pilot facility in Pohang by 2028, then potentially expand from the southeast cluster to a Gwangyang-led southwest hub after validating the initial model.
