Prosecutors seize bank accounts of Montana firm reportedly linked to Tether
WFC•U.S. prosecutors seized nearly $81 million from Capstone accounts at Wells Fargo, $2 million from an account at JPMorgan and about $1.2 million in Tether tokens. Capstone denies the allegations, and Tether said it was unaware of the alleged fraud.
1. Seizure and allegations
Prosecutors said Capstone misrepresented its money-services business as an information technology company when opening bank accounts and used the accounts in a scheme that allegedly defrauded victims by impersonating FBI agents. Capstone’s lawyer said the firm denies the allegations, has cooperated with the investigation and hopes to resolve the matter quickly. Tether said it had no knowledge of Capstone’s alleged conduct and that its assets held at the bank were limited; court filings did not allege wrongdoing by the other firms.
