PureCycle and StackTeck Achieve 100% Recycled Living Hinge Cap Performance
PCT•PureCycle and StackTeck produced a living hinge cap using up to 100% PureFive® recycled polypropylene, matching the dimensional tolerances of virgin resin. The caps passed living hinge fatigue tests, demonstrating PCR resin’s ability to withstand hundreds of flex cycles and unlocking sustainable packaging opportunities in food, beverage, and personal care.
1. Collaboration Produces Living Hinge Cap
PureCycle and StackTeck used up to 100% PureFive® recycled polypropylene to manufacture a living hinge cap, achieving the same dimensional tolerances as a virgin resin counterpart. This marks the first time post-consumer recycled resin has met the mechanical and geometric standards required for this application.
2. Performance Validation
The caps passed multiple customer-related tests, including the living hinge fatigue test, demonstrating that the recycled resin can endure hundreds of flex cycles without failure. Testing confirmed that PureFive Ultra™ and PureFive Choice™ deliver equivalent mechanical performance to virgin polypropylene in demanding cap and closure designs.
3. Market Implications
This breakthrough opens sustainable packaging opportunities in food, beverage, personal care and household products by allowing brand owners to incorporate 100% recycled content without sacrificing functionality. Meeting FDA standards for food contact and APR certification further positions PureFive® resin for rapid adoption under evolving regulatory requirements.
4. Resin Technology and Certification
PureCycle’s dissolution recycling process removes color, odor and impurities from #5 plastic waste to produce PureFive® resin, which can be reused multiple times. The resin meets FDA food-contact standards and holds APR certification for PCR content, enabling seamless integration into existing manufacturing processes.
