PureCycle’s PureFive resin gains one-year PCR approval, enabling 10.5M lb NJ supply
PureCycle’s PureFive resin received a one-year conditional designation as post-consumer recycled content under New Jersey’s Recycled Content Law, enabling supply to brands facing rising PCR requirements. The company sourced 10.5 million pounds of PCR in New Jersey last year and plans to ramp Ironton, Ohio output while seeking permanent approval.
1. Conditional PCR Approval
PureCycle received a one-year conditional designation for its PureFive resin as post-consumer recycled content under New Jersey’s Recycled Content Law. This approval allows the company to begin supplying brands and manufacturers that must meet the state’s minimum PCR requirements while PureCycle compiles additional feedstock, processing and compliance data to pursue permanent approval.
2. Feedstock Sourcing and Production Ramp
Last year PureCycle sourced over 10.5 million pounds of post-consumer recycled plastic from New Jersey, the highest volume from any state. With production increasing at its Ironton, Ohio facility, the company expects to boost output and meet growing demand for PureFive resin throughout the next year.
3. New Jersey Recycled Content Mandates
New Jersey’s law requires rigid plastic containers to contain at least 10% post-consumer recycled content in 2024, rising by 10% every three years until reaching 50%. Food-contact packaging is exempt until 2027, and companies must secure regulatory approvals that can take several months before bringing compliant products to market.
4. Market Applications and Partnerships
PureCycle’s physical dissolution recycling process produces PCR resin with properties akin to virgin polypropylene and FDA food-contact clearance, making it suitable for various rigid packaging uses. The company has already partnered with Plastic Ingenuity to develop coffee lids containing 25% to 100% recycled content, demonstrating early commercial adoption.
