REalloys Awarded First Commercial Rare Earth Plant on U.S. Base
USAR•REalloys won a U.S. Army contract to build the first commercial heavy rare earth processing facility at Utah’s Tooele Depot, targeting dysprosium and terbium refining with initial operations by 2028. USA Rare Earth is cited among key sector players benefiting from the accelerated supply chain rebuild.
1. Contract Award
The U.S. Army selected REalloys to build and operate the first commercial heavy rare earth mineral processing facility on the Tooele Army Depot in Utah, marking the integration of private-sector critical mineral processing within a military installation.
2. Project Timeline
Commercial development is slated to begin in 2027, with initial operating capability no later than 2028 to refine dysprosium and terbium for high-temperature permanent magnets used across defense systems, ahead of the January 1, 2027 federal ban on Chinese rare earth materials.
3. Sector Benefits
USA Rare Earth is listed among the companies poised to benefit from accelerated domestic rare earth supply chain development, alongside MP Materials, Albemarle and others as Washington compresses years of buildout into months to secure strategic mineral access for defense and energy applications.
