Instagram Reels Ads Reach 51% Share as Threads Surpass X’s 125M Users
Instagram Reels accounted for 51% of Instagram ads in 2025, versus 35% in 2024, with Reels driving 46% of Instagram engagement and contributing to a $50 billion run rate. Meta’s Threads mobile daily active users reached 141.5 million, eclipsing X’s 125 million, as the company forecasts $70–72 billion capex for AI in 2025.
1. Meta’s $600 Billion AI Infrastructure Push
Meta Platforms announced a commitment to invest roughly $600 billion over the next several years in AI infrastructure and U.S. job creation, underscoring its ambition to build what Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan described as “personal superintelligence.” Kaplan told CNBC’s Squawk Box that this funding will support expansion of custom chip designs, hyperscale data centers and the development of foundational models such as Llama. The company forecasted capital expenditures of $70 billion to $72 billion in 2025, with upward pressure expected in 2026 due to continued build-out of AI compute capacity. Management emphasized that these investments are designed to accelerate product innovation across Facebook, Instagram and emerging VR/AR services while also driving long-term revenue growth through differentiated AI-powered advertising tools.
2. Reels Becomes Instagram’s Primary Ad Format
Data from Sensor Tower reveals that over 50 percent of all Instagram advertising in 2025 ran on Reels, up from 35 percent in 2024. In the U.S., Reels accounted for 46 percent of total time spent on the Instagram app last year, a jump from 37 percent the prior year. On Facebook, Reels usage rose to 29 percent of time spent in 2025, compared with 22 percent in 2024. Analysts at Neuberger Berman and Sensor Tower attribute this shift to AI-driven recommendation engines that surface highly personalized short-form videos, which in turn boost user engagement and ad impressions. While Meta has noted that Reels currently commands lower monetization efficiency than the main feed, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg highlighted in late 2023 that the format helps grow overall engagement and that Reels had surpassed a $50 billion annual run rate by October.
3. Threads Surpasses X in Mobile Daily Active Users
Market intelligence firm Similarweb reported that Meta’s text-based platform Threads reached 141.5 million daily active users on mobile as of January 7, outpacing Elon Musk’s X, which logged approximately 125 million mobile DAUs. Threads’ growth reflects Meta’s strategy of leveraging its broader app ecosystem to promote cross-platform engagement. Although X maintains a lead in web-based visits—around 150 million daily compared with Threads’ web audience—Meta’s mobile traction underscores the success of its feature integrations and AI-enhanced recommendation algorithms. Industry observers note that sustained mobile growth could attract additional advertiser spend to Threads, helping to diversify Meta’s ad-revenue streams beyond its flagship apps.
